Expoliants, Moisturizers and Toners For Acne Scars

Some acne scars eventually fade, while some don’t.  Anyone can suffer from the distressing damage that acne scars can leave. 

You should not lose hope though. The health and beauty market offers you a lot of choices of acne scar skin care products. All you need to worry about is how to select the best from among those options.

Acne scar products can be classified into 3 major groups.  You can use any one of these three types, or you can use them all at the same time since each type works differently.

Exfoliants

The most essential part of the acne healing process is removing the damaged skin.  Exfoliants work by “burning” the rough and uneven skin, giving it a new and fresh look after a few applications. 

Exfoliants contain AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid), a natural substance which “unglues” the superficial layer of the skin.  This causes the dead skin cells to shed off, allowing the skin to rejuvenate.  AHA helps a lot in getting rid of uneven skin pigmentation caused by acne scars.  AHA-formulated medications are also known to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which makes the skin look firm. 

There are five types of alpha hydroxyl acids used in commercial products: glycolic acid, which is derived from sugar; lactic acid, from milk; malic acid, from apples and pears; citric acid, from oranges and lemons; and tartaric acid, from grapes.

Although AHA is derived from natural products, it can worsen your skin condition if not used proper application dosage.  No worries though, because the Food and Drugs Association has prescribed guidelines in the AHA concentration of commercial exfoliating products. 

You also need to wear sunscreen if you are using an exfoliant.  You can also buy exfoliants which are already formulated with sunscreen

Moisturizers

Exfoliants can rip out your skin’s moisture, so it’s always important to follow the exfoliating application with some moisturizing cream or lotion.  Moisturizing creams can give your skin a smooth and supple appearance.  Moisturizers soften the rough surface of your acne scar, thus improving its texture and speeding up healing.

Toners 

Facial toners can tighten your skin’s pores and maintains the normal pH balance of your skin.  This is a safeguard against bacteria that can cause irritation, breakouts, and further acne scars.

You might be surrounded by claims that tell you how effective some acne scar skin care products are.  But you should be careful about this, as what is effective for them might not be effective for your skin type. 

Your first step should be finding the right doctor to give you an advice as to what brand you can safely use.  If you would like to try the products on your own, it is important that you read the instructions in the bottle or box before using the product.  More often than not, you will be warned to watch out for any allergic reactions a few minutes after applying the acne scar skin care product on your skin.
